Synopsys has broadened its semiconductor intellectual property portfolio with the acquisition of Intrinsic ID.
It’s a strategic move aimed at bolstering its semiconductor IP offerings. The purchase price wasn’t disclosed and it was not material to Synopsys’ operations.
Sunnyvale, California-based Synopsys, which is publicly traded on Nasdaq, has completed the acquisition of Intrinsic ID, a provider of Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) IP utilized in system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Back in January, Synopsys bought Ansys for $35 billion.
The acquisition, finalized on March 20, 2024, marks a significant expansion of Synopsys’ semiconductor IP portfolio, empowering SoC designers worldwide to enhance security and protect their chips through the generation of unique identifiers.

The addition of Intrinsic ID’s proven PUF IP technology not only boosts Synopsys’ existing portfolio but also brings onboard a team of seasoned research and development engineers known for their expertise in PUF technology.
Joachim Kunkel, general manager of the solutions group at Synopsys, emphasized the growing importance of PUF technology in today’s interconnected landscape, citing its applications in identification and product tracking.
“In our increasingly connected world, chip designers are integrating PUF technology in their SoCs for many applications, including identification and the creation of a product ID for track and trace,” said Kunkel, in a statement. “The acquisition of Intrinsic ID complements our extensive semiconductor IP portfolio, further helping designers create SoCs that are at the heart of today’s smart and connected devices.”
Synopsys plans to expand research and development operations in the Netherlands, leveraging Intrinsic ID’s team to establish a center of excellence for PUF technology in Eindhoven.
Synopsys, a prominent provider of silicon-proven semiconductor IP solutions, boasts a comprehensive portfolio encompassing logic libraries, embedded memories, analog IP, wired and wireless interface IP, security IP, embedded processors, and subsystems. The company’s IP Accelerated initiative aims to expedite IP integration and silicon bring-up, offering architecture design expertise, hardening, and signal/power integrity analysis.
